Taipei-Matsu EYE Unlimited Image Cloud Workstation is Launched

The diabetics in Matsu area will have good luck! The Zhongxing branch of Taipei City Hospital founded an EYE Unlimited image cloud workstation in the Matsu area, enabling the ophthalmological team from Taipei to provide the diabetics in Matsu with retinopathy interpretation and tracking services via image transmission of Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) in the long term, and to reduce the hardship of local people due to commuting from Matsu and Taipei.

Woung Lin-Chung, Deputy Superintendent of Taipei City Hospital, says diabetic retinopathy is one of the most serious eye complications for diabetics; delayed treatment can often result in blindness. Therefore, the prevention of diabetic retinopathy is an important key to preventing patients from going blind.

Cai Jingyao, director of the Ophthalmology Department of Taipei City Hospital, points out that the survey results in the past decade show that 40% of diabetics in Matsu area suffer from diabetic retinopathy. The longer you suffer from diabetes, the more easily you can get diabetic retinopathy. Therefore, the eye care of the diabetics in the Matsu area has become a big challenge to the local medical care.

He points out that currently there is no eye specialist available in the Matsu area and the Ophthalmology Department of Taipei City Hospital sends eye doctors every other week to tour around the islands of Matsu to provide medical services. In the past, to receive precise eye examinations, the diabetics had to travel to Taipei, which costs a lot, not to mention the expenses of the family members accompanying the patient.

The Ophthalmology Department of Taipei City Hospital began to gradually establish “ophthalmology cloud” PACS in different branches since last year, enabling doctors to precisely judge patients’ conditions through accessing image data in real time via computers and raising ophthalmological medical quality when working in different branches.
