Division of Gastroenterological Surgery, Ren-Ai Branch, Taipei City Hospital
In the early years of this hospital, the Division of Gastroenterological Surgery was established after great effort by the former superintendent, Dr. Ko. The special target was the surgical treatment of various gastrointestinal diseases and numerous reports had been published in several peer reviewed journals. Among these, radical surgery with lymph node dissection has been introduced as the standard treatment for gastric cancer since 30 years ago. In 1987, Dr Liu Mao Ho who was assigned as Head of this Department and a more extensive study of the gastrointestinal diseases began. This included updated therapies on laparoscopic cholecystectomy since 1990 ,which hsd become the standard treatment for cholelithiasis at this point in time and has significantly decreased postoperative morbidity and wound pain. The therapeutic system for surgical diseases of the gastrointestinal tract has been completely reorganized under the supervision of the present Head Dr. Lee Meng Dar. Specialist surgical treatment modalities are provided for all kinds of diseases including biliary tract stones, abdominal trauma, gastrointestinal bleeding, inflammation,hemorrhoids, fistula, constipation and various malignancies, such as esophageal cancer, hepatoma and colorectal neoplasm. This hospital has become the backup hospital for accepting patients with difficult and/or complicated diseases of the gastrointestinal tract from the other hospitals
All the visiting staff of this department have obtained their board specialty in gastrointestinal surgery and they offer good quality medical care . Our head ,Dr Lee Meng Dar, has been chosen as a member of the committee of the Association of Gastrointestinal Surgery and is now the Head of Surgical Department within the city hospitals, This hospital thus has become the Center of the Gastrointestinal Surgery for interhospital cooperation and for the united development of special surgical treatments. In addition to having frequent referrals with rare and complicated cases, there are monthly meetings at the various city hospitals, which are aimed at more efficient communication and a better quality of patient care.
