Atopic dermatitis Skin Care in the Summer
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic relapsing dermatitis and one of the common allergic reactions in children. The most important allergens are dust mites, dust, animal hair, etc. The effects of food should also be considered for babies. The symptoms aggravate during seasonal changes. Taiwan’s studies show that highest ratio of aggravation occurs from spring to summer, possibility related to the weather patterns in Taiwan.Dr. Liu Yi-Ling, a Dermatologist at Taipei City Hospital, Heping Fuyou Branch, said that atopic dermatitis requires the proper showering techniques and cleansing products based on the conditions of the skin and weather. Excessive cleaning or the use of overly stimulating cleansing products may induce skin dryness. Children are recommended to shower as soon as they get home to remove sweat. The use of cleansing products depends of the condition of each individual, but is generally recommended to be used on important areas. In addition, since a hot environment can aggravate itchiness, moderate levels of air conditioning are recommended. Also keep in mind that air conditioners make indoor air dry, so place some water or wet towels in the room to regulate humidity, and use lotions to moisturize the skin. Dr. Liu mentioned that the treatment consensus still centers around topical steroids for atopic dermatitis among domestic and international specialists. When the skin has a bacterial infection, the use of antibiotics needs to be considered. Oral antihistamines are also often required. Many people worry about the use of topical steroids. However, the proper application under the doctor’s orders and prescription is the safest and most effective method of treating atopic dermatitis. Even though the control and treatment of atopic dermatitis cannot completely rid the disease, choosing a trusted doctor should be very beneficial for the skin condition and quality of life, and have a better chance of being cured.
